The Intensive Aphasia Program (IAP) at the Marquette University Speech and Hearing Clinic (MUSHC) is a rehabilitative speech/language program for persons with chronic aphasia. IAP is an individualized program, designed to meet the specific needs of the patient, utilizing both traditional and constraint therapy principles. The impetus for this program is research that suggests intense therapy over a short period of time improves outcomes. Thus, the therapy schedule is quite rigorous, meeting three hours per day, five days per week, for three weeks. To be considered for the program, the patient must be at least six months post onset with residual speech/language impairments, have fairly good comprehension, and be able to participate in an intensive therapy schedule.
To date we have had about 20 patients participate in this program. Preliminary impressions of our research suggest that therapy delivered in an intensive manner over a short period of time improves outcomes for particular forms and severities of aphasia.
