Welcome to a new semester, Sept. 5, 2013

Dear students,

One of my favorite things about the start of a new fall semester at Marquette is reconnecting with many of you and hearing stories and insights from your summer travels, near and far. That’s certainly been the case this year. In fact, 10 Marquette students had a summer experience so remarkable that I hope every one of you will benefit from hearing about it.

In Rio de Janeiro for the celebration of World Youth Day, these Marquette travelers heard Pope Francis address millions of young people. As generous-hearted and captivating as ever, the first Jesuit pope expressed his profound hope for young people like you. “Put on faith,” if you want your life to have real meaning and fulfillment, Pope Francis said.

“Put on faith, put on hope, put on love.” This is the message that our students wanted you to hear when they returned from Rio. (First-year students will recognize these words because I first shared them at New Student Convocation.) Pope Francis’ words are all about urgently engaging life and faith, which is exactly how our university community wants you to approach your time here. I hope you put on Marquette with the same passion championed by Pope Francis. Welcome the mysteries and opportunities of the coming year, whether that’s tackling an ambitious new academic challenge, working on behalf of the poor and marginalized or joining a table full of potential new friends at lunch.

A similarly willing spirit is certainly with our university community as we join together to move Marquette forward. In this semester kickoff video, you’ll see some of the exciting ways that Marquette is changing and growing this year, including the emergence of new learning spaces in some of our most historic buildings and the expansion of the School of Dentistry, both physically and in its service to students and our community. Truthfully, what’s covered in these four minutes can only begin to capture the energy and enthusiasm that abounds on campus, so much of it aimed at ensuring you a student experience that prepares you for a world of growing complexity. That’s the vision that unites our university community and that we believe sets Marquette on a path to be among the world’s most innovative and accomplished Catholic and Jesuit universities.

Please know that your needs as students are at the heart of our efforts. As you put on Marquette, our role is to ensure it fits in a way that helps you reach your unique potential — to help you discover your future role as difference-makers, ready in the spirit of St. Ignatius “to go and set the world on fire.”

Sincerely,

Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
