Second semester updates, Jan. 22, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

Just days into the new semester, the transformative work of education at Marquette is in full swing. Thank you for the energy, wisdom, and compassion that you bring to your interactions with our students.

I want to take this opportunity to encourage your participation in several important events in the life of the university this winter.

• With the four finalists for the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences set to visit campus starting this week, Marquette is on the verge of selecting a candidate for this important position. I encourage you to take advantage of opportunities to hear the candidates speak and to ask them questions.

• In lieu of the annual Presidential Address, I will host an interactive workshop Wednesday, Jan. 30, to involve Marquette’s faculty, staff and students in the next step of our strategic planning process: generating ideas for the concrete, university-wide goals that will bring the plan into focus. This work on goals builds on strategic planning themes that have been newly revised based on feedback from the university community. Please respond to the invitation for the President’s Strategic Planning Workshop so this blueprint for Marquette’s future will benefit from your perspective. Your contributions at the workshop will help shape the goals presented to Marquette’s Board of Trustees in early March, with the drafting of the full plan coming by the end of the semester.

• As part of this year’s Mission Week, Marquette has the rare opportunity to honor the 10 recipients of the Opus Prize, the international award for the world’s foremost faith-based social innovators. Marquette first hosted the annual Opus Prize selection process and ceremony in 2005, and the celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary here will bring many of the program’s celebrated award winners to campus, an ideal complement to Mission Week’s annual exploration of faith and mission in our university community and world.

And of course, that’s only the beginning of what will be happening at Marquette this semester. Before the month is over, expect to hear more about efforts such as the reaffirmation of accreditation process and the assistance we will need reviewing the self-study document prepared by the steering committee and its nine subcommittees.
