Role of the University Academic Senate in Strategic Planning: Sept. 17, 2012

Dear Members of the University Academic Senate,

As you know, chief among our priorities this academic year is the creation of a university-wide strategic plan that can guide our decision-making for the next five to seven years.

The participation of the University Academic Senate in the development of this plan is of critical importance to its success. Through the work of the Strategic Plan Coordinating Committee and through UAS involvement at multiple stages in the plan’s development, UAS should expect to participate robustly in the strategic planning process.

Specific examples of UAS involvement include:

  • Appointment of Sandra Hunter, associate professor of Exercise Science, as the UAS representative to the Coordinating Committee
  • Monthly agenda items at UAS meetings on the plan’s development, with updates from the Coordinating Committee and feedback and input solicited from UAS members on topics such as the environmental scan undertaken by the Coordinating Committee and the budget planning process
  • Participation by UAS in representative campus work groups throughout the strategic planning process
  • Participation by UAS Chair James South and Vice-Chair Lea Acord on the University Leadership Council, which will review the plan’s progress at meetings during the fall and spring semesters

Additionally, we anticipate sharing drafts of components of the plan as they develop in the spring semester for your comments. I will also ask the UAS for endorsement of the plan before presenting the final document to the Board of Trustees in May 2013, as outlined in the current UAS statutes.

The ultimate strength of any institution of higher learning rests on the knowledge, experience and collaboration of its faculty. As campus leaders, your feedback, input and guidance throughout the process will be crucial to our success in creating a dynamic plan that encompasses our collective wisdom, dreams and desires.

I look forward to collaborating with you to develop a strategic plan we can all benefit from in the years to come. Thank you for the work you do each and every day to elevate Marquette to new heights of academic excellence.

Sincerely,

Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
President
