Transform the World
Mother Teresa

Should drug users be punished — or treated? What are the by-products of the widening gulf between the wealthy and the poor? What are the special needs of victims of crime? As a Jesuit university wrestling with questions such as these, we are pleased to offer a major in social welfare and justice. The major, which blends the expertise of our faculty in criminal justice, victim services, social work, social welfare, sociology and community action, is dedicated to preparing you to be a leader as you work for justice.

THE MARQUETTE ADVANTAGE

CONCENTRATE. Our victim services concentration explores the policies and laws that affect victims of crime, child and elder abuse, rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse. A pre-master of social work concentration focuses on courses that prepare you for graduate school in areas such as social work, social policy and law.

INTERN. Make a difference before you graduate. The pre-MSW and victim services concentrations include one- and two-semester internships at shelters for victims of domestic abuse, Hunger Task Force, health care clinics for the homeless, and the Milwaukee mayor’s office.

CROSS TRAIN. Combine our standard major with economics if you’d like to establish a business with a low-income community group. Blend with theology if you want to work with churches to provide effective services for victims of domestic abuse. Mix with chemistry and lobby Congress for access to affordable medication for those without health insurance. Do it all ...and graduate in four years.

THE REAL WORLD. Work with professors who put their research into public action by exploring legal issues surrounding domestic abuse and child advocacy or evaluating the effectiveness of polygraphs in sex offender treatment.
