Sociology

Human interaction is a mosaic of behavioral, physiological and environmental patterns. The things we talk about with others, the way we talk about them, the way we act - all are shaped by the cultures and societies in which we live. Sociology devises ways for us to understand the dynamics and complexities of human interaction.

They've published more than four dozen books on these subjects. Our department has been home to Social Problems, one of the premier academic journals of sociology.

THE URBAN LABORATORY. Marquette’s setting in the heart of a big city provides a cultural laboratory of human experience for budding sociologists. Our department offers an interdisciplinary internship program, and many of our courses offer service learning opportunities, where you can link your classroom experience with meaningful community service. Opportunities may include serving at neighborhood organizations while learning about the history and challenges of neighborhoods; tutoring homeless children while examining the roots of poverty in the United States; providing respite care to patients while learning about families in crisis.
