Student organizations have been working on environmentally friendly and socially responsible projects for years. We encourage you to seek out student organizations through their Web site(s) and events like O-Fest.
There have been several recent projects put on by student groups here on campus. some of these include:
Adopt-a-block liter patrol: Adopt-a-block was initiated to address the problem of litter in and around campus. Students work in groups of two or three to pick up, sort, and dispose of any litter found on the city block they select to patrol. Groups are prompted to canvas their block once a week. As the initiative grows, there are plans to assign clean-up groups to blocks in the neighborhoods surrounding Marquette's campus and student residential areas. Students for an Environmentally Active Campus (SEAC) has been supported in this initiative with the donation of biodegradable trash bags from GREEN Paper Products.
Glass Bottle Water Conservation: SEAC is in the midst of a campaign targeting water conservation in the bathrooms of student apartments and houses. Empty glass bottles are distributed to students to be placed in the water tanks of their toilets. Doing so can save 12oz of water per flush. Stickers are placed on the outside of the toilet tanks to advertise the campaign. This initiative's Custom Sticker Printing was partially donated by StickerGiant.
Wisconsin Native Tree Project: Students for an Environmentally Active Campus (SEAC) has teamed up with the Office of Public Affairs and the Department of Biological Sciences to see how we can incorporate native trees on campus. Native trees are more durable and require less watering since they have adapted to our climate. Find out where they already are on campus via the Wisonsin Native Tree Collection brochure.
Hunger Clean-up: Hunger Clean-up seeks to make our students aware of the issues of hunger and homelessness in Milwaukee. Check out the Hunger Clean-up Web site.
The Campus Kitchen Project: This innovative program brings together students, on-campus dining service professionals and community organizations to combat hunger in Milwaukee. They served over 14,000 meals last year to local organizations. More information on The Campus Kitchen Project.
The eLIMO project: This is a collaboration between the eLIMO Project Team, MATC, and several corporations to retrofit one of our L.I.M.O vans into an electric vehicle (EV). You can find updates in the AHOYA newsletter.
Student Rain Garden: Engineering students created a rain garden on campus a few years ago in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to help mitigate storm water runoff. It will be cleaned up this weekend during Hunger Clean-up and we expect to see it replanted within a few weeks.

Obviously, this is only a handful of the myriad projects happening on Marquette's campus and we encourage all of you to send us details about projects you are working on or plan to work on in the future that involve sustainability.
