Welcome to Marquette Theatre

A word from Stephen Hudson-Mairet, Design/Scenic Artist and Chair of the Department of Performing Arts...

I want to thank you for your interest in the Department of Performing Arts at Marquette University. As a part of the William J. and Mary Diederich College of Communication, within the greater Marquette University, we believe that the Department of Performing Arts offers students a unique opportunity to grow as theatre artists seeking to impact their world.

Let me share a little about our fine department:

Our department is committed to the Jesuit mission of Marquette University; committed to the tenets of excellence, faith, leadership, and service in our work.

Our students value the strong emphasis on a Liberal Arts education. The well-rounded curriculum that extends beyond the classes taken in the theatre program help students develop into artists who reflect the world around them.

We believe that the best way to teach theatre is to do theatre. Our production season is an integral element of our pedagogy – this is where the classroom meets the practice. Our students work very closely with our professionally active faculty, and are active in our main stage season from the first day.

Our department offers students hands on opportunities as actors, directors, scenic designers, lighting designers, costume designers, and technical theater specialists.

Our students have the opportunity to major in theatre and other disciplines, both within the College, and the greater University. Whether it is a double major with Broadcast and Electronic Communication, or with Mechanical Engineering, our students take full advantage of the opportunities available at Marquette.

Our department is committed to teaching the whole person. We are concerned not only with guiding students to their personal best as artists; we are concerned that they use their talents for more than just entertaining. The department works to use art to make a difference in the lives of others.

Our department promotes an expectation and ethos where students are supportive of each other. They work together with a deep respect, and enjoyment in creating theatrical productions. And it is a good time too.

Our department is committed to developing and maintaining strong links to the professional industry; developing relationships that provide internships and jobs after graduation for the department’s students.

Upon graduation, our students find a large family of artists working in the many theater, television, film and entertainment industries who continue to support each other as they venture into their careers and journey through life.

I invite you to spend some time and explore our website.  Whether you are an interested audience member, prospective student, or valued alum, you can discover more about the Department of Performing Arts at Marquette University.
