By day, village women manufacture the very gunpowder that will kill their fathers,
sons and husbands in war. At night, nothing they can do washes every bit of
saltpeter, sulphur and guilt from their hands. Poor Tom refuses to fight.
Instead, his duty is to stay behind and try to force the women to see what they
are doing, and to plead with them to live a life with purpose and a sense of the
future. But in a society that is morally blind, will Tom's words fall on deaf ears?
