Associate Professor and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies
Mickey L. Mattox (Ph.D., Duke University, 1997), [Historical], is a specialist in the theology of the great German Reformer, Martin Luther. He does research in premodern theology and exegesis, particularly where such research may help to resolve the ecumenical problems that continue to divide Protestants and Catholics.
Most recently, Mattox is the co-author, with Dennis Bielfeldt and Paul Hinlicky, of The Substance of the Faith: Luther’s Doctrinal Theology for Today, forthcoming from Fortress Press in 2008. His first book, Defender of the Most Holy Matriarchs: Martin Luther's Interpretation of the Women of Genesis in the Enarrationes in Genesin, 1535-1545, was published by Brill in 2003. His essays have appeared in several leading journals, and he has published a number of articles in authoritative reference works and specialized monographs. He is currently working as the volume editor for Genesis 12-50 in the Reformation Commentary on Scripture series, forthcoming from InterVarsity Press. He is also preparing a text and translation with historical introduction for the 1531 lectures on Genesis of the famous reformer of Basel, Iohannes Oecolampadius.
Mattox also has extensive experience in international Christian ecumenism. He was Research Professor in the Institute for Ecumenical Research (Strasbourg, France) from 2000-2003, and served as a consultant to the Lutheran World Federation (Geneva) for their dialogues with the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Anglican Communion, and others.
