Wade Chair Holder, Fall 2007

Fr. Philipp Gabriel Renczes, S.J., Ph.D., was born in Stuttg art , Germany; entered the Society of Jesus in 1983; and ordained a priest in 1992.  He received a doctorate in “Histoire des Religions et Anthropologie Religieuse” in 1999 from the Sorbonne, the University of Paris, writing his dissertation on the topic, “Human liberty: the concept of “habitus” in the theological anthropology of Maximus the Confessor.”  In the same year he also earned a doctorate in theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris, writing on the topic, “The Activity of God: The concept of operation in the theological anthropology of St. Maximus the Confessor.”  Since 2000 Fr. Renczes has been a member of the theology faculty at the Gregorian University in Rome, teaching a variety of courses in theology:  e.g., Grace, the Trinity and the Incarnation, Systematic Theology through the Centuries, and the Philosophical Backgrounds of the Fathers of the Church. In fall 2007 Fr. Renczes will teach THEO 164: Special Questions in Systematic Theology: The Theology of Joseph Ratzinger.
