Andrew Kunz, Assistant Professor, Physics
I am Andrew Kunz, assistant professor of Physics since arriving at Marquette in 2004. My committee work has been primarily departmental to this point but I am interested in getting involved in campus wide activities. I believe interdisciplinary work is important and therefore the Committee on Academic Issues and Policies is of particular interest due to its focus on the academic mission of Marquette as a whole.
Joseph Schimmels, Professor, Mechanical Engineering
Dr. Schimmels has been a member of the faculty at Marquette for 20 years and is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In department-level service, he currently serves as a member of the Mechanical Engineering Department's Executive Committee and the Graduate Committee, and he chairs the Department's Undergraduate Assessment Committee. In college level service, he has been a member of the College of Engineering's Promotion and Tenure Committee and has chaired the Engineering Core Curriculum Task Force. In terms of university level service, he has served on several committees including the Committee on Faculty for 4 years.
I am interested in participating in and facilitating the increasing the role of faculty governance at Marquette. I am particularly interested in advocating and participating in initiatives to improve quality at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Darren Wheelock, Assistant Professor, Social and Cultural Sciences
I am an assistant professor in the Social and Cultural Sciences department at Marquette University. I received my Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Minnesota in 2006 and I am in my fifth year at Marquette University. Thus far, my committee service has been confined to my department but I think it is important that I begin to give back the broader Marquette community. I would like to serve on the Faculty Hearing Committee because faculty make up the backbone of the University and participating in the faculty grievance process is vital to ensure that we are being treated fairly and our voices are being heard, especially when concerning grievances and possible university sanctions.
Jack Winters, Professor, Biomedical Engineering
My PhD is from UC Berkeley, 1985. I have been a faculty member in biomedical engineering at 3 institutions spanning the past 26 years (10 here at MU), holding the rank of professor for the past 15 years. In a previous position at Catholic University, I was on a number of university-wide committees, plus their Academic Senate. But none (except as a semester sub) since coming here; perhaps it's time. Long-range planning and vision seems interesting, and I bring the perspective of having served at 3 institutions and also having experienced the "joys" of administration (8 of 26 years).
The Committee on Academic Policies and Issues (CAPI), a standing committee of the University Academic Senate, pursues long-range planning and vision of the academic mission of the university as it transcends individual programs, schools and colleges. Its business may be initiated by the Senate, the Provost, other Senate bodies, or individual faculty.
