Catholic Charities--New Orleans Area, LA (6)
Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New Orleans, the oldest
Catholic Charity in the U.S., pairs up volunteer groups
with parish centers to deliver assistance and labor to parishioners and community members affected by the '05 hurricanes. Volunteers will stay in either parish homes or a parish center and complete work orders for debris removal and reconstruction in the neighborhood.
Madison Counties
Allied Against Poverty is a community agency located
in the community of Canton, MS. Physical work may include
housing rehabilitation projects which will probably
include painting and basic carpentry work. The group
will participate in various orientations and Mad-CAAP
programs on rural poverty and racism in the area while
interacting with members of the local community.

Located in the capital of Alabama, Resurrection Catholic Missions reaches out to the community around it. Some of the things that you may do here include assisting in the child care center, working in Resurrection Catholic School (tutoring, P.E., reading, etc.), assisting with the elderly outreach program, gardening, or assist with the addiction counseling program.
Ivanhoe Civic League, Ivanhoe, VA (12)
As a former hard rock mining town, Ivanhoe is working to rebuild itself while grappling with high unemployment rates. The Ivanhoe Civic League is a strong, community-based organization that administers programs for education, surplus food distribution, and home repair. The League’s presence in Ivanhoe centers on community-building and is an integral part of the town’s efforts to rebuild itself. Volunteers may be engaged in a variety of work tasks including picking up litter, refurbishing houses, painting, working at a used clothing store or visiting the housebound or elderly. Typically, there are multiple groups of college students who will be with you during the week.
The Christian
Appalachian Project (CAP) is a non-profit, interdenominational,
service organization, started in 1958 and incorporated
in 1964. The purpose of CAP is to assist people who
are economically, socially, and/or physically disadvantaged
in Eastern Kentucky, to become self-sufficient. Students
will be working with CAP volunteers and students from
other universities. Activities will mostly be home repairs/construction.
Bon Secours - Baltimore, MD (6)
This site is an inner city outreach where students discover how to offer "Good Help." Students may help in a number activities in the surrounding community including the inner city poor and the rural migrant workers. The activities include helping in a homeless shelter and a soup kitchen. Students may also assist in after school tutoring program. This placement is typically a year-long post graduate volunteer program and students will be fit into this for the week.
L’Arche
communities attempt to build a normalized family environment
for the mentally and physically disabled. Students will
have the opportunity to live and work with the community
members in a variety of capacities. Activities may include working in the wood shop, touring local
malls or walking along the lake front with the wheelchair
group, spending the day with handicapped children, or
going shopping with the elderly members of the community.
Not a very physically challenging trip, yet emotionally,
it will leave you exhausted at the end of the day. The
group may be split up to live in different houses during
the week, but will meet up each day for activities.
In Erie, the activities may include assisting with daily
activities (cooking, cleaning, etc.), yard work, painting,
and "Spring House."

The Detroit
Catholic Worker or Day House is in the inner city neighborhoods
of Detroit, just a few blocks from Tiger Stadium. In
the morning, students will help prepare and serve food
at the soup kitchen. Some help may also be needed during
the day to answer the phone or door, prepare meals,
or clean the house. The rest of the time the group is
free to help with any social justice activities at the
house.

Enid, Oklahoma
is home to about 50,000 people, and exhibits a strong
sense of community that students will feel very much
a part of. Students will work with the local Habitat
chapter to build a house for an Enid, OK family. This
may entail beginning work, such as framing, roofing,
and siding the house, or later stages, such as painting
and building flower beds. Usually, students are able
to build the house alongside the family who will be
living there.
This is a Jesuit Parish which has been serving the African-American community of St. Louis for many years. People serving in this placement can expect to do nursing home visitation, youth programming and activities, home repair, and even gardening. You can be sure you will have good contacts with people in this needy, yet vibrant community.
This Jesuit parish is bordered on one side by a thriving downtown area, and on the other side, a neighborhood in transition and need. St. Peter Claver attempts to build a bridge between both worlds. This is a new site for MAP, and we look forward to doing significant service in the area including Soup Kitchen work, direct contact with the poor, and helping Catholic Social Services.
SCA is primary school recently founded by Sister Sandra Smithson in 2003. This is an opportunity to work in the classroom with grade school students, their parents and staff to build basic academic skills in an urban environment. You will get to know other volunteers as you live and interact with them on a daily basis.
Cristo Rey School Kansas City provides a Catholic, college-prep education to culturally diverse students with economic need. Cristo Rey schools focus on solid academic learning and training in the skills needed for successful employment later in life. Started by the Sisters of Charity of Lovingworth, Kansas, the school follows the model of all Cristo Rey schools, namely, the integration of academics, work, and extracurricular activities.
The school is located in the predominantly African-American area of Omaha, not far from Creighton University. JMSO serves young men in grades 4 through 8. It provides a quality education for all faiths. The school commits itself to walking with and supporting its graduates through high school and into college.
Northeast Ohio Immersion, Cleveland and Akron, OH (7)
Participants on this trip will be working in the Akron/Cleveland area helping to address issues of homelessness and urban poverty in Northeast Ohio. Cleveland has the unenviable reputation of being one of the poorest large cities in the United States and has the Midwest's largest men's shelter.
Flood Relief, Oakville, IA (12)
Oakville is a small town in Louisa county, which has the lowest per capita income in the state of Iowa. The flooding of 2008's summer left millions upon millions of dollars in damage. You will work with the community of the small town of Oakville with many spring repairs and building of houses. You will work alongside members of local churches and flood victims while hearing their stories and experiences of homelessness and perserverance. Building skills are not needed, just a desire to learn and to help.
