Purpose of Mission-Centered Hiring

Marquette University's Mission Statement builds on a long Christian, Catholic and Jesuit tradition. It values the dignity of the human person, pursuit of excellence, pursuit of truth, leadership, justice and service. The mission statement is both an expression and a continuing source of Marquette's identity.

The Office of University Mission and Identity was formed through collective wisdom to internalize the mission of the university. The Office of University Mission and Identity is a focused approach for encouraging and facilitating a consciousness of Marquette's mission and its values in the process of appointing faculty and hiring staff. One goal of the office has been to develop a systematic way to assist interviewers and search committees in utilizing the Mission Statement in hiring decisions.

Mission-Centered Hiring brings together a variety of writings about, and interpretations of the mission and what it means to be a Catholic and Jesuit university. With this material and guidance, search committees and hiring supervisors can reflect on, discuss, and discern those meanings for themselves and their respective departments, translate them into qualities desirable in candidates, and select persons who best embody them. Goals of Mission-Centered Hiring

  • To assure that those hired understand, appreciate, and embody the mission values in their work at Marquette University.

  • To select mission-related questions, discussions, or activities to evaluate the extent to which each candidate possesses these qualities.

  • To provide candidates with information about Jesuit education and Marquette's mission and values so that they can evaluate their own fit and better prepare themselves for mission-related discussions in the selection process.

This approach to hiring is valuable because it:

  • Preserves the tradition and purpose of Marquette University.

  • Increases the likelihood of an on-going harmonious environment in departments or teams as new individuals are added.

  • Assists interviewers in gaining a deeper understanding of candidates beyond their technical or academic expertise.

  • Provides a supportive environment where candidates hired can thrive and contribute effectively to Marquette University's mission.
