Welcome to Mission Week 2009!

Thank you to everyone who helped or participated in Mission Week events. Now posted below are Dr. Shirin Ebadi's Keynote address and book discussion, Rev. John Fitzgibbons Heartland/Delta "Class Reunion" talk, as well as all of the MU Voices interviews. Picture slideshows of Mission Week 2009 will be up soon!

February 1 - 8, 2009

The theme for Mission Week 2009 is,
iAct:Consequences of Faith.

The founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola, reminds us that, “Love is found more in deeds than in words,” and this year’s Mission Week theme, “iAct:  Consequences of Faith,” reflects the same deeply held conviction. How we live in relationship to others says a great deal about our understanding of faith and how God works with us.

It is the faith of this year’s Mission Week keynote speaker, Dr. Shirin Ebadi, that propelled her into becoming one of the most courageous and outspoken defenders of human rights in her nation.  It is faith that draws us as a Catholic, Jesuit university toward inter-religious and intercultural dialogue, and it is our faith in God and the inherent goodness of human beings that drives the ethic of service that so inhabits every corner of Marquette.

We hope that you were able to take part in Mission Week 2009 and reflect on how your own spirituality and faith influences your actions for good. In the classroom and outside of it, love truly is found in the deeds of many people in this Marquette community!

Mission Week 2009 Keynote Speaker
Dr. Shirin Ebadi,
Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize (2003)

“Human Rights and the Consequences of Faith”

As the first female judge in Iran, Ebadi was stripped of her basic rights by religious revolutionaries who declared women unfit to serve as judges. Undaunted, she persevered as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in controversial, politically charged cases. Though she has been arrested and the target of assassination attempts, she has courageously continued to speak out on behalf of victims of injustice and discrimination. Ebadi created one of the first, independent, nongovernmental human rights organizations in Iran, The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child, and her influence extends far beyond the borders of her country. She is the first Muslim woman and first Iranian to receive the Peace Prize, the path toward which is chronicled in her 2006 book, Iran Awakening: One Woman’s Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country. In honor of her many accomplishments, Marquette will awarded her with an honorary degree.
