Program Description
The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology program at Marquette University provides students with an introduction to the field of Gerontology. It is an interdisciplinary, non-degree graduate program leading to a Certificate in Gerontology. The program can be taken by itself or in conjunction a graduate degree in another field. Coursework leading to the Certificate in Gerontology is designed to give students:

  • An understanding of the broad, interdisciplinary nature of issues which relate to and influence older adults;
  • An understanding of the processes of aging;
  • A background in existing theories and research in Gerontology;
  • An understanding of the programs, policies, and services that exist for older Americans;
  • A foundational background as preparatory for graduate work, or professional practice where gerontological knowledge is required.

Prerequisites for Admission
Admission decisions are based on a variety of criteria, each of which is intended to measure the applicant's ability to succeed in the program. Applicants to the certificate program must have graduated with a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. They must also have a grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better in undergraduate course work. Students from any undergraduate field may be accepted into the program.

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit directly to the Graduate School:

  1. A completed application form and fee.
  2. Official transcripts from all current and previous colleges except Marquette University.
  3. Three letters of recommendation.
  4. Test scores from a recognized graduate school entrance examination are recommended but not required; e.g., GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MAT.
  5. (For international applicants only) a TOEFL score or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.

Upon acceptance to the Graduate School, applicants will be asked to complete a one-page registration form for the certificate program and submit it directly to the certificate program administrator.

Certificate Requirements
To earn the Certificate in Gerontology, a student must complete 3 required courses and 1 elective course (totaling a minimum of 12 credit hours). With appropriate approvals, these courses may be applied to other graduate programs at Marquette University. Additional tuition and/or permissions apply to those courses indicated with *.
