John G.'s goals

My goals for this year are both technical and personal. On the technical side, I would really like to gain a better grasp on APA and Chicago style. I figure it’s probably time I get out of my MLA comfort zone, as it’s becoming more and more apparent to me that the professional world and its disciplines don’t use it that much. I will also be looking to grow in my document design skills, or lack thereof. I’ve always avoided programs like InDesign as much as possible. So this semester especially, my goal is to get more comfortable and immersed in document design. This is a bit of a tangent, but I think it would be cool if we had a few tutors who were proficient in programs like these lead a workshop for multi-modal presentations and dynamic documents. I know I could certainly use some help with these types of programs.

And in terms of more personal goals, I’d like to grow in my listening skills in a conference. Often times I’ll get distracted—especially when a tutee reads outloud—and I focus on what I want to say to them when they’re done speaking, rather than fully listening to them. So, as another goal stemming from this one, I want my responses to be authentically rooted in what they are saying to me. I think this would help get me on more of the same page and could lead to a more successful conference (however the heck you measure success).
