Please join us for a Mellon Grant-sponsored Writing Across the Curriculum two-day workshop that will take place on January 20 and 21, the end of the first week of classes, in the Raynor Conference Center . Friday's workshop will begin with a lunch at 11:45 a.m. and will run till 3 p.m. The Saturday workshop will start at 9:30 a.m. (we'll furnish muffins and coffee) and run till 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be included. Because the second day will build on the first, we can only register those who can attend both days.

Our goals for the workshop include opportunities

•  to create clear, effective writing assignments that address course goals;

•  to integrate kinds of writing that will help students engage in discourse about course content and understand it better;

•  to make the most of your grading time and make your comments useful;

•  to hear about and discuss best writing practices at Marquette University and beyond;

•  to discuss good teaching and learning with others from different fields;

•  to hone your skills at familiarizing students with standards for writing in your discipline; and

•  to meet with experts in writing and to talk with them during lunches and breaks.

The workshop leaders are Bradley T. Hughes, Director of Writing Across the Curriculum and Director of the Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and Neal Lerner, Lecturer in Writing Across the Curriculum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he teaches scientific and technical communications.

We will register faculty members on a first-come-first-served basis. To register, please e-mail paula.gillespie@mu.edu and indicate your interest in attending both days.
