FAITH

Jesuit at Marquette gets millions of YouTube hits for his tin whistle lessons

By Jim Stingl, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

This all started simply as a way to help Rev. Ryan Duns' music students practice their tin whistles. Beginning in 2006, he posted instructional videos on YouTube. You know how we sometimes underestimate the internet's ability to spread stuff around? That happened to Duns. Suddenly the planet was digging his way with a whistle.

He posts tutorials and sometimes just plays a tune for people's entertainment, about one a week, and he even takes requests. Duns figures not everyone can afford lessons, and he knows some are surprised the instruction is coming from a guy wearing a Roman collar. "I think music and spirituality are both deep hungers that people have," Duns said. Read the full story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

October reflection: A time to celebrate Marquette

By Rev. Frederick Zagone, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry

We just celebrated Reunion + Homecoming 2018 on campus. Despite rain almost every day, events from Stuff the Truck (collecting food for Hunger Task Force), the Bed Races on 12th Street, the Rock the Mall Concert to the Sunday Masses in the Church of the Gesu celebrated Marquette.

Homecoming and Reunion are both opportunities to return to a place with special meaning in our lives. We revisit favorite places that remind us of past experiences. Our students have the exciting opportunity to create the memories that will follow them for a lifetime. Perhaps you met your spouse or maybe your best friends at Marquette. Even if s/he is no longer here, there may have been a teacher or staff person who somehow affected your life. Sometimes, it is just nice to come home to a familiar place.

Those who attended the events this year saw many changes on campus. The Henke Terrace at the 707 Hub was dedicated. The Athletic and Human Performance Research Center is taking shape. The frame of the new Physicians Assistants building is visible from the freeway. The excitement of The Commons residence hall has created a whole new hub of activity at the western edge of the campus. Reunion attendees got to see the campus abuzz with students.

The celebration at Marquette isn’t confined to a single week. Every day provides new opportunities and challenges for our students. We move forward ready for transformation knowing that God has great plans for us. We have high expectations for our students, faculty, staff and alumni to be the difference.

We pray God continues to bless Marquette. Our learning. Our teaching. Our research. Our living. May God bless you, too. And don't forget to click here to check out the All Souls' Day Remembrance in November.

LEADERSHIP

In Foxconn development, an opportunity for minorities and women in STEM fields
An op-ed by Dr. Kristina Ropella, Opus Dean, Opus College of Engineering, Marquette University

Published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A Foxconn representative said recently that up to 80% of its future employees would be engineers and research and development scientists, a move that has some concerned about the future of the labor market in southeastern Wisconsin. But to me, this news represents an opportunity.

Engineers should be more representative of the world in which they live. We are challenged to solve unique world problems, so we must draw on a workforce that brings unique viewpoints on how we are innovating to solve those problems. Marquette University and other universities and colleges in the region will step up, training more engineers with diverse backgrounds to fill these higher-paying jobs. While it will be a challenge to rise as a community and prepare a diverse workforce to meet the demands of our new neighbors, I am convinced we can do it through innovative programs and creative collaborations.

Marquette, Near West Side Partners, receive $1.3 million grant for housing, economic development

By Sean Ryan, Milwaukee Business Journal

Milwaukee was among 25 applicants for the $5 million in HUD Choice Neighborhood grants awarded in September. Marquette University, one of the founding members of the Near West Side Partners, played an important role in helping draft the grant application, which sets the course for the housing authority to eventually rehab its 248-unit College Court public housing property at 3334 W. Highland Blvd. Beyond that, it could help devise new programs to upgrade the area’s market-rate housing, education, public safety and business climate.

Dr. William Welburn named new vice president for inclusive excellence at Marquette

Dr. William Welburn, formerly the executive director of institutional diversity and inclusion, has been promoted to vice president for inclusive excellence, a move Provost Dan Myers says is critical to elevating Marquette’s commitment to being a more inclusive campus for all. Welburn’s new role is effective immediately.

"What I am most excited about is our embrace of ‘inclusive excellence’ because we are at our best when we are diverse," Welburn said. "We have set a very high standard for ourselves. We aren’t there yet; we are imperfect and have work to do, but we can get there."
