From 2007 to 2015 he served as Associate General Counsel at Marquette University. Previously, Professor Smith was a Captain in the US Army Judge Advocate’s Corps and was with a law firm in Dallas, in both cases practicing government contracts law. After becoming Group Counsel at Johnson Controls in 1990, Professor Smith has served 25 years in a variety of in-house legal roles, including at the Medical College of Wisconsin, providing a wide variety of business-related legal services.
Professor Smith currently teaches BULA 3001, Legal Environment of Business; MBA 6200, Enterprise Risk Management; BULA 4001, Business Law; and BUAD 6931 and EXBU 6931, Business Law. He also serves in the Marquette University Law School as an Adjunct Professor of Law. He previously also taught Economics and Law, Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management in the College of Business Administration. Professor Smith also served for five years as President of the Zeta of Wisconsin Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest honorary academic fraternity society in the United States.
The intersection of law and economics, particularly the economic implications of governmental regulatory schemes; alternative theories to the legal treatment of corporations as persons; the need for the creation of benefit corporations; statutory interpretation issues; and the application of common law legal principles to emerging business opportunities.
