Who

Marquette students will be going to Lisbon, Portugal, to participate in the Jesuit run Magis program and Pope Francis' sponsored World Youth Day events.

When

The Marquette group's experience will run from July 22 - August 6, 2023, plus days to travel to and from Lisbon, Portugal.  There are two segments of the Marquette group's experience:

MAGIS 2023 (July 22-31, 2023)
Magis is a Jesuit run program drawing thousands of college students from Jesuit institutions around the world for a series of immersive experiences in Portugal and Spain grounded in the Spiritual Exercises.  This highly interactive experience provides participants with countless meaningful opportunities to connect with peers from a wide variety of countries.  Marquette students have held up the Magis program as the highlight of previous World Youth Day pilgrimages.

World Youth Day (August 1-6, 2023)
World Youth Day is a regular worldwide gathering of youth and young adult Catholics convened by the pope.  One of the highlights of World Youth Day is Mass with Pope Francis.

Where

Lisbon, Portugal, will serve as the hub.  Magis experiences will also involve travel to Spain.  Participants should have an up to date passport.

Cost
Costs are still being finalized.  We estimate that airfare will run around $1000 per person.  The required Magis program is an additional 250 euros per person, which covers accommodations, meals, Magis related experience travel, partial emergency insurance, and Magis materials.  World Youth Day costs are still being determined.

Theme

“Mary arose and went with haste” (Lk 1:39) is the bible quote chosen by Pope Francis as the motto of the World Youth Day that will be held for the first time in the capital city of Lisbon, Portugal. The biblical phrase, a quote from the Gospel of St. Luke, opens the account of the Visitation (Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth), a biblical episode following the Annunciation (the angel’s announcement to Mary that she would be the mother of the Son of God, and the theme of the last WYD, in Panama).

Addressing young people in particular, and challenging them to be courageous missionaries, the following was written by the Pope in the Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit: “Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, no limits: he sends us everywhere. The Gospel is for everyone, not just for some.” (CV 177).

Applications for World Youth Day are now closed. Thank you to those who expressed interest in this experience.
