Joe received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio in 1987. He then earned his masterís degree in organic chemistry and his law degree, both from Marquette (1990 and 1992, respectively). His thesis advisor was Dr. Charles Wilkie. He was encouraged to pursue a career in patent law by Marquette Professor Emeritus of Law Ramon Klitzke (whose own undergraduate degree is in chemical engineering).

Joe litigates patent, trademark, and copyright disputes in the federal courts throughout the United States. He has also successfully argued before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (which hears all patent appeals in the United States). He has written and secured more than 250 patents for inventors in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech fields. He has particular expertise in peptidomimetics, small-molecule pharmaceuticals, nonaqueous electroytes, and aqueous reforming reactions. In addition to industry clients, Joe has drafted patents for academic clients, including Marquette University, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, University of St. Thomas, The Ohio State University Research Foundation, The University of Chicago, and many others.
