Who is eligible to participate in the Engineering Leadership Academies?

Rising high school juniors (11th) and seniors (12th) are eligible to apply and participate in the Engineering Leadership Academies. Students from any geographic location are welcome to apply as well.

When and how can I apply for the Engineering Leadership Academies?

Applications for the Engineering Leadership Academies will become available in the late winter-early spring each year.
The application includes basic student information, a high school transcript, a teacher recommendation form and a personal statement.

Applications will be reviewed as space is available. Selection decisions will be communicated to applicants in mid-May.

Who leads the Academies?

The Engineering Leadership Academies are facilitated by Marquette University faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students in the Opus College of Engineering. Participants in the Academies also have the opportunity to interact with recent MU alumni and industry partners through informational panels and off-campus site visits.

What does the residential experience include?

Students will reside in the Commons Residence Hall on Marquette's campus.  Participants will be paired by the Outreach Staff with a roommate of the same gender. We traditionally do not honor roommate requests, barring any medical or extenuating circumstances.  Participants will be provided with basic bedding (fitted sheet, top sheet, 1 pillow and pillowcase), one set of towels (bath towel, hand towel and wash cloth); students are welcome to bring any other additional bedding or pillows.

Participants will eat the majority of their meals in the Commons Dining Hall, which offers extensive cuisine options for each meal. The Sodexo Staff of Dining Services at Marquette can accommodate a wide variety of food allergies and dietary restrictions.

What does the "leadership" component of the Engineering Leadership Academies entail?

Based off of the principles of Marquette's Excellence in Leadership Program (E-LEAD) three-year curriculum, students of the Academies have the opportunity to learn more about Leading Oneself, Leading with Others and Leading Innovation. Participants of the Academy apply these leadership principles throughout the week in individual and group settings, such as self-reflection exercises and group design challenges.

What sorts of activities do students experience during the Engineering Leadership Academies?

Participants will participate in a variety of on and off campus experiences during the Academies, including things such as:

  • Experiencing the life of a Marquette engineering student
  • Hands-on lab and lectures led by Marquette engineering faculty
  • Academic major and career exploration facilitated by Marquette students, staff, faculty and alumni
  • Interactions with industry partners and employees through company tours, professional panels and industry inspired engineering design challenges.
  • Exploration of Marquette's campus and downtown Milwaukee through group excursions

Is scholarship funding available for students to attend the Academies?

Yes, due to the generosity of several donors, scholarship funding is available. Students may apply for scholarship funding via an optional Scholarship Application included within the application packet.
