Teaching Assistant Professor
English
My work focuses on rediscovering lost books, books that once enjoyed periods of popularity and influence but are now omitted from dominant narratives of literary history. Exploring neglected Irish novels of the nineteenth-century, I investigate how competing cultural and historical narratives have shaped aesthetic evaluation and canon formation. I am particularly interested in examining changing genre conventions, such as gendered allegories and colonial representation, and my research has involved significant engagement with Victorian British and modernist Irish literature as well as the Romantic, Spanish picaresque, and Gothic traditions. My interest in the legacy of this last tradition has led me to write and publish several short stories inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
Years of experience working with not only university-level but also high school and English language learners have made me mindful of the variety of frustrations students face when attempting to translate their thoughts into engaging and effective modes of communication. I enjoy grapple with these frustrations in my classrooms and helping my students become confident, successful writers.
