2018-19 Events

  • Spring 2019 - Shakespeare and Friends (and Rivals): A Celebration of Poetry, Thursday, April 11, 2019, from 5-6 pm in the Eisenberg Reading Room in Sensenbrenner Hall
    Folks from around campus and First Stage's Young Company, Bard and Bourbon, cast members of The Rivals, and many others read Poetry and Shakespeare.  Followed by opening night of The Rivals at 7:30 pm in the Helfaer Theatre
  • Fall 2018 - Humanities in the Workforce (Panel and Networking event)

    What: Learn more about what's possible with a humanities degree by hearing career stories and advice from Marquette Humanities alumni. MU alumni who graduated with English, History, Languages, Philosophy and Theology degrees will discuss their career paths in law, education, startups, and the corporate sector along with sharing their insight on how MU humanities students can develop professionally during their time at Marquette.

    When: Wednesday, November 7 from 5:30-7pm (no need to worry about dinner – there will be subs, snacks, and refreshments!). Panel will take place from 5:30-6:30pm, networking/1:1 questions with panelists from 6:30-7pm

    Where: Eisenberg Reading Room (3rdFloor of Sensenbrenner Hall)

2017-18 Events

  • Spring 2018 - Thursday, 3/29, from 4:00-5:00 in MH 105 - A poetry reading by Marquette English Alumna Jenny Benjamin and Marquette English Emeritus Professor Ed Block. Free and open to the public. Light refreshments provided.
  • Spring 2018 - Thursday, 2/15, from 3:30-4:30 in MH 105 - A talk by Adam Kotski - "Animated Nihilism: Rick and Morty, BoJack Horseman, and the Strange Fate of the Adult Cartoon.
  • Fall 2017 - Wednesday, November 15, at 5pm in the Eisenberg Reading Room, Sensenbrenner Hall (1103. W. Wisconsin Avenue), with a reception following. The New York Times calls R. M. Ryan a writer who works at “the juncture of rapture and rupture.” He is the author of three books of poetry, two novels, and years of art criticism and investment commentary.   • Fall 2017 - Wednesday, November 1, at 5pm in MH 105, a panel on Writing Internships will be held featuring two recent grads who used internships to help get them their first jobs, and Dr. Cedric Burrows, the English Department’s Internship Coordinator. Refreshments provided. Sponsored by FAME, the Friends and alumni/ae of Marquette English.

  • Spring 2017 - April 1 (Saturday): One day conference on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, organized by James South of Philosophy and Gerry Canavan of English. Time and location TBA.
  • Spring 2017 - April 6 (Thursday), Anything Goes with Shakespeare! Folks from around campus and around Milwaukee will be reading from Shakespeare (and other works of literature) in the Eisenberg Reading Room, Sensenbrenner Hall at 5 pm. Followed by opening night of Anything Goes at 7:30 pm in the Helfaer Theatre
  • Spring 2017 - May 5 (Friday), Student Fiction and Poetry Reading at Boswell Books, 2559 N. Downer Avenue at 7 pm. 
  • Fall 2016 - Thinking about a creative career? Come to “Fantastic Careers and Where to Find Them” on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 5pm in MH 105. Brandon Barber, COO of Terminal.com (and former VP of Marketing for KixEye), Hannah Klapperich-Mueller, founder and Executive Director for Summit Players Theatre, and Wyatt Massey, human right journalist and men’s health advocate (all three MU English alumni!) talk about tips for being an entrepreneur for yourself, and how an English major or minor could help you.   • Spring 2015 - Friday, May 1: MU Undergrad Writers Reading at Boswell Book Company at 2559 N. Downer Avenue, Milwaukee, WI. See flyer for more information.
  • Spring 2015 - Thursday, April 16: You’ve Got to Hear This: Shakespeare & Company, The Literary Slam; Engineering Hall, 4th floor, 1637 W. Wisconsin Avenue, 5-6 p.m. Prominent Milwaukeeans and people from the Marquette community will read from their favorite works of literature, and explain why you’ve got to read these works. It being close to the Bard’s Birthday, he’ll be featured, but so will lots of other writers.
  • Spring 2015 - Thursday, March 26: Internship Panel, Marquette Hall, Rm 105, 5 pm. This panel discussion will include Dr. Cedric Burrows, a student who’s recently had an internship, and a local employer who regularly has interns. Find out about why internships are important, how to get them, and what to do after you’ve gotten one. A reception will follow.
  • Spring 2015 - Thursday, February 26: Adam Plantinga will discuss his new book 400 Things Cops Know, Raynor B&C at 5 pm. Adam is an MU English major grad, and was a Milwaukee policeman for seven years before moving to San Francisco and becoming a policeman there, where he’s currently a sergeant. He’ll be reading from the book, discussing the writing of it, and a Q&A session will follow. Great for discussions about writing nonfiction, about criminology and law, about social justice. This event is being co-sponsored by the Social and Cultural Sciences Department. A reception will follow.
  • Fall 2014 - 10/23 "What to Do with an English Major?" (Marquette Hall 105, 4:30-6:00 p.m.) with panelists JoEllen Burdue, Director of Media Relations from the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Kathleen Gray, Partner at Quarles and Brady, Ron Hofer, Freelance Writing Teacher, former District Staff Attorney for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District II and Samantha Yee, Clerical Specialist, The Milwaukee Justice Center and recent graduate.

  • Spring 2014 - 2/24: Amina Gautier, author of At-Risk and winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award in Fiction, will read from her work on Monday, 2/24, at 5 p.m. in the Raynor Library Beaumier Suites. A reception will follow.

  • Spring 2013 - 4/10: Professor Thomas Wortham, Professor Emeritus at UCLA, former editor of Nineteenth Century Literature, and one of Joe Schwartz's students at Marquette, will be delivering the Schwartz lecture on American novelist and man of letters, William Dean Howells.
  • Spring 2013 - 2/21: “A Roundtable Discussion on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.” (Raynor, Beaumeier Suite 4:30)

2011-12 Events

  • Spring 2012: As part of the English Department's annual "Shakespeare's Birthday Party" celebration, the English Department, FAME (Friends and Alumni of Marquette English) and the Office of Student Development are proud to present "In Acting Shakespeare," a theatrical production featuring James DeVita of American Players Theatre.
  • Spring 2012: January Book Swap.
  • Fall 2011: Louisa May Alcott Series. Marquette University Libraries in collaboration with Milwaukee Public Library announce a five-event series on "Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women." Angela Sorby and Sarah Wadsworth will present lectures, lead discussions and host film screenings. The dates are Sept. 19, Oct. 6, Oct. 25, Nov. 10, and Nov. 29

2010-11 Events


  • Spring 2011: Celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday with FAME! Scenes performed by actors Matt Daniels and Marcella Kearns from Milwaukee Shakespeare Rep and discussion led by MU Renaissance scholars Dr. Amelia Zurcher and Dr. John Curran.
  • April 29, 5-7 PM, Raynor Library Conference Center. Proceeds go to support "What You Will, a partnership of performers in education."
  • Spring 2011 - Book Swap: an event to promote the love of reading. Friends and Alumni/ae of Marquette English (FAME) coordinated a Book Swap, 12:30-2:30, Sunday January 31, at the Alumni Memorial Union. Members of the Marquette neighborhood flooded into the AMU carrying gently used books to swap. Guests were encouraged to take home half as many books as they donated, which left over 1,000 books at the end of the afternoon! These books, and the donations FAME collected, were given to two local agencies which promote literacy and learning:CrossTrainers Academy (part of the Milwaukee Rescue Mission) and Sojourner Family Peace Center. All of the English faculty and graduate and undergraduate students who helped run the event were thrilled with the success of the Book Swap!
