The Center for Gender and Sexualities Studies is dedicated to encouraging and conducting research on gender and sexual diversity. Through community collaboration research the CGSS helps to address gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, disability, nationality, and religious inequalities experienced in the greater Milwaukee community.

Research Initiatives

Women and Girls of Color Research Initiative Grant

In 2016, the CGSS and Marquette University joined a collaborative of universities and organizations who made an active commitment to invest in research and scholarship on the lives of women and girls of color. Depending on the project and funds available, the Research Initiative Grant will provide between $10,000 and $100,000 to select projects that examine this population. Some projects will be funded outright and others will be selected for fundraising solicitations with select benefactors.

Funding can be used to begin, continue, and/or complete a research or writing project on women and girls of color. Authorized expenses include: student research assistants, research related travel, supplementary faculty salaries, computer equipment, or general purpose software. Each faculty applicant can request a stipend of up to $2,000 per summer of funding.

All proposals will be reviewed by a grant review committee, and funding decisions will be made by the CGSS board and the Provost. Preference will be given to applicants whose projects have not received any external support, to interdisciplinary research teams, and to projects that have a particular focus on the Milwaukee area. Successfully funded faculty will be required to meet with the ORSP to discuss external funding of their project.

Student Projects

The CGSS offers funding for undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research and attend professional conferences. Funding is provided across all disciplines, but preference is given to students majoring in Interdisciplinary Gender and Sexualities Studies. Funding is limited and approved by the Director of the Program. In the past, funding has been awarded to assist students working on dissertations. Contact us for more information.

Marquette University offers an array of scholarships available to provide students with support. In addition, there are several external scholarships available support LGBT individuals and allies, women, and those studying gender and sexualities studies.
