A Perfect Thrill

Elsa Ulbricht & The Milwaukee Handicraft Project

June 8 – August 5, 2018

A Perfect Thrill: Elsa Ulbricht & The Milwaukee Handicraft Project features a small selection of works by revered Wisconsin artist, educator, and innovator Elsa Ulbricht, along with objects from the nationally acclaimed Milwaukee Handicraft Project. Ulbricht was a life-long resident of Milwaukee. She received a degree in education in 1906 from the State Normal School in Milwaukee and a degree in art education from the Pratt Institute of Art (in New York) in 1911. She subsequently returned to Milwaukee and taught clay modeling, weaving, basketry, mechanical drawing, bookbinding, and public school teaching methods at the State Normal School.

Ulbricht was a founder and chair of the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a member of the Arts Student League, which later became the association that formed the Milwaukee Art Museum. She devised and oversaw the nationally recognized Milwaukee Handicraft Project, a WPA initiative that provided jobs for approximately 5,000 people (mostly poor, unskilled women), to manufacture toys, rugs, and printed fabrics.

A Perfect Thrill was planned in conjunction with the annual Historic Concordia Home Tour, which will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The tour will include Elsa’s former home at 915 N. 28th Street.

Most exhibitions feature a guide, offering illustrations, essays by national and international scholars and museum staff, artist biographies, exhibition histories, bibliographies and a list of works. Guides are available for purchase at the museum or by emailing us.
