Bill CullinanWelcome to the Fall 2015 edition of the College of Health Sciences e-newsletter. We have a number of exciting updates in the college, and I'm pleased to share them with you.

This Fall we welcomed our largest freshman class ever - some 320 students. Our graduate professional programs in physical therapy, physician assistant studies and speech and language pathology are fully subscribed and/or expanding.

Our faculty researchers continue to undertake ground-breaking work that is noticed by the scientific community and the National Institutes of Health, as evidenced by a number of large new grant awards.

Dr. Sandra Hunter, in collaboration with Dr. Robert Fitts, received $2.8 million for her work on muscle mass, fatigue and the effects of exercise in an aging population. Dr. Jennifer Evans received $1.7 million to study the effects of biological rhythms on human health. And Dr. Doug Lobner received nearly $500,000 for his toxicity studies.

A number of faculty and staff in the college also received awards for teaching and service at the recent College of Health Sciences Convocation. Those awarded include Dr. Jeff Berry, Dr. Chris Simenz, Diane Novotny and Rosie Moser. Congratulations to the award recipients, and thank you for your many years of service and instruction.

Marquette Presents will visit Chicago this month thanks to the generous support of Dan and Susan Real. The forum series will be held on October 21 at the University Club of Chicago. The topic is "Depression - The Intersection of Hope, Medicine and Research," and will feature faculty researchers as well as special guest Trenni Kusnierek, a Marquette alum and sports anchor, who will share her personal story. We hope to see many of our Chicagoland friends at the event, for which you can register here.

You can also view the video of our recent Marquette Presents forum on geriatric depression, which was held on campus in September.
