History

Steven Avella, a full-time member of the department since 1991, has combined his love of the 20th century American West with his expertise in the field of American Catholic history.

Education

Ph.D., Notre Dame 1985

Research Interests

His scholarly work attempts to demonstrate the often complex interactions of the Catholic church and communities of the West. He also provides commentary to local and national media on Catholic issues in the United States, hopefully helping the wider community understand the sometimes complex workings of the international Catholic church.

Publications

His most recent book, a biography of Sacramento Bee editor/publisher Charles K. McClatchy, is slated to be published by the University of Missouri Press.
