James M. Weiss, Arts ’68, was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 2012.
Following his graduation from Marquette in 1968, Jim served in the U.S. Army until mid-1970, including a 15-month tour of duty in Korea. In 1970, he entered the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, completing his MBA in 1972. Jim then joined the investment counseling firm of Stein Roe & Farnham in Chicago where he worked until 1992. He then became president of IDS Equity Advisors in Minneapolis. In 1995, he moved to State Street Research and Management in Boston, where he became chief investment officer–equities until late 2002, when he left to establish Weiss Capital Management. From 2015 to 2017 he was a senior portfolio manager with Segall Bryant & Hamill Investment Counsel (Chicago), which provides investment management services to individuals, trusts, estates, endowments, and corporations. Jim elected in mid 2017 to retire after 45 years in the profession.
Jim holds chartered financial analyst (CFA) and chartered investment counselor (CIC) designations. He served on the boards of Colie and Harris (furniture wholesalers) and Tropp & Co. (insurance brokerage). He has been active in community affairs, serving in Glenview, Ill., on the village’s zoning board of appeals and on the board of trustees. In Concord, Mass., he served on the Fenn School Board of Trustees. Jim was also a member of the board of Gaining Ground, an organic farm, until 2013. Jim was a contributing author of The Handbook of Cash Flow Management.
Jim received the National Alumni Service Award in 1995 and headed the Marquette University Executive Senate in Chicago for a number of years. Born in Chicago, Jim spent the second half of his childhood in Racine, Wis., where he met his late wife, Kathleen, at St. Catherine’s High School. They were married for 37 years before he was widowed in 2007. He is blessed to have four children, two sons-in-law, and eight grandchildren. The Weisses are a three-generation Marquette family beginning with his parents in the 1930s, himself, and his son in the 1990s. Jim married Mary Skinner in 2016.
