Cataloging and Metadata Librarian

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian provides access to library collection resources by performing original and copy cataloging, the batch loading of records, metadata creation, the review and resolution of issues and problems in the library’s catalog and discovery interface, and the completion of catalog maintenance projects. This position reports to the Coordinator of Technical Services. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, assess and refine cataloging workflows, policies, and procedures, in collaboration with the Coordinator of Technical Services
  • Prepare record sets and perform the batch loading of MARC and non-MARC records
  • Perform original and copy cataloging of materials in all formats, in accordance with appropriate national and local standards
  • Provide and maintain ongoing access to e-book collections
  • Review, test and resolve problems with description, retrieval and display of bibliographic records in the catalog and discovery service interfaces in consultation with Library Information Technology, Resource Management and Research and Instructional Services Departments
  • Perform automated and manual catalog maintenance projects including global editing, record enhancement, and batch deleting of records
  • Participate in metadata creation, harvesting, manipulation, and enrichment projects for digital content
  • Participate in training staff and preparing effective training materials
  • Contribute to and learn from the profession through such avenues as local, state and national professional organizations, presentations and publications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited institution
  • Experience with integrated library system (e.g. Sierra) cataloging module functions
  • Experience with RDA, LCSH and LC classification, authority control, and MARC and non-MARC metadata formats and standards (Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to work with colleagues in collaborative and team environments, as well as independently
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Commitment to professional development

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of data manipulation tools such as MARCedit
  • Experience with XML and XSLT
  • Working knowledge of a Western European language
