The 3D printers (a MakerBot Replicator+ and MakerBot Z18) in the Digital Scholarship Lab are available to the Marquette community for making three-dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a file.
Guidelines and Print Procedure
Printing takes place during regular service hours: 8 AM - 6 PM Monday- Friday. Depending on the length of the queue, your print will be ready within 7 business days.
The library reserves the right to refuse prints that will monopolize the printer or take an extremely long time to print. To help prevent this, we may ask you to scale down the size of your print, if we can print at a lower infill, or if we can print your submission in pieces to be glued together. In some cases, we may ask you to resubmit your print as smaller files.
3D printing consultations are available via this form. Consultations are intended to provide you a basic understanding of how 3D printing works, i.e. what software can be used to develop a model, best practices for preparing a model for printing, offer resources to learn more about how to utilize 3D modeling software to develop 3D models. The consultation is not intended as an introduction on how to use 3D modeling software or how to design a 3D model. The lab offers 3D printing workshops on these topics at several points during the semester.
The cost of a 3D print is $0.10 per gram of material used (including rafts and support material required to print your object successfully). After submitting your file, a staff member will contact you via your Marquette email to confirm the anticipated cost of your print. Your acceptance of the fee is considered your agreement to pay. Prints must be picked up by the end of the semester and failure to pick up a print may result in a hold in the amount owed on your library account.
Submitting a Print
Please submit a .stl file (no larger than 25MB) to the DSL via the print request form. Upon acceptance of price, your request will be added to the printing queue.
In the notes, please specify the desired dimensions in mm or inches. Please also list the number being requested if more than one.
Wait/pickup time: Items may be picked up at the service desk located in the Digital Scholarship Lab. While it is difficult to estimate exact print times, we expect most prints to be completed and ready for pick within seven business days.
The DSL 3D printer may be used only for lawful purposes. All objects printed need to be in line with the Marquette University Student Code of Conduct. You are not permitted to print anything in violation of another’s intellectual property rights. The printer will not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection.
