Overview & Expectations
The Marquette International Friendship Program begins each year at the start of the fall semester and runs until the end of the spring semester.
As a volunteer, you agree to participate for a one year period and are matched with a new incoming Marquette international student. We call our volunteers community friends. The program does not involve home-stays, but rather involves regular get-togethers at a time that works for you and your student.
Ideally, you will meet with your student once a month to learn about each other’s cultures while sharing social or family activities. Activities can include almost anything, and many pairs will find they share an interest in sports, cultural events or outdoor activities. Others may find that they just prefer to meet for coffee once in a while to chat.
We recommend that you include your student in activities that you are already involved in, as opposed to creating special events. These are often an excellent way for our students to learn about American culture.
To participate, you are required to attend an orientation, which discusses program details and expectations. The Office of International Education then hosts a Meet-Your-Match kickoff event where you will have the opportunity to meet your student for the first time. Typically, OIE also hosts a closing event at the end of the academic year.
