Dr. Long joined the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology in 2002. Dr. Long’s research interests and in the areas of child phonology and language, dialect, and bilingualism. He has published nearly three dozen book chapters and papers on a range of topics in child phonology and language disorders, primarily from a linguistic perspective. He is the principal author of Computerized Profiling and MaUSECat, computer programs that facilitate the analysis of speech and language samples in English and Spanish and provide an efficient way to select and present picture and video stimuli for treatment in both languages.
In 1994, Dr. Long was recognized as a co-author on the "article of highest merit" published in the Journal of Speech and Hearing Research. In 2004 he received the Louis DiCarlo Award for Clinical Achievement from the Wisconsin Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In 2008 he was cited as a Distinguished Reviewer by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements. And, away from campus, he was honored as the 2010 Volunteer of the Year by the Centro de la Comunidad Unida of Milwaukee.
