What is I-Lead?

Sponsored by Student Affairs and MUSG, I-Lead is a program open to first or second-year students who want to deepen their leadership skills. This program will take a cohort of students through an Ignatian-centered leadership development and culminate in students attending the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference (NJSLC) at Detroit Mercy July 10-14, 2019.

Participants will meet weekly on Thursdays (5-6pm) from January – April for workshops with I-Lead mentors and engage in activities that help them understand their own leadership styles as well as grow in their leadership skills.

Participants will also develop their own leadership workshop throughout the course of the program, which they will present to I-Lead participants and other peers.

Participants will also work to develop a proposal to present their leadership workshop at NJSLC and submit that proposal to the NJSLC for consideration. If accepted, students will present their workshop at this national conference.

NJSLC in Detroit

What is NJSLC?

The National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference (NJSLC) is a five-day conference for students of all 28 Jesuit colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Sponsored by the Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators (JASPA), a different Jesuit institution hosts the conference every summer. The conference provides student leaders with collaborative opportunities to develop ideas, explore issues, and build stronger leadership skills to better serve their institutions in the Jesuit tradition. NJSLC is comprised of student-led workshops, group discussions, social programming, a day of service, and opening and closing banquets.

This year’s conference theme is Rising from the Ashes. The conference schedule is still being planned, and if you commit to the I-Lead program, please note that you are committing to attending the conference as well.

In terms of time conference time commitment, know that dates are July 10-14, 2019. These dates include travel time as well. It is ideal for the Marquette delegation to travel together, so we are asking students who participate to be in Milwaukee on July 9, travel from Milwaukee to Detroit on July 10, and travel from Detroit to Milwaukee on July 14.

Why Should you participate in I-Lead and NJSLC?

I-Lead will give you valuable professional experience such as attending a national conference, engaging in an online interview, and writing a program proposal. Specifically, program participants will:

  • Practice and gain experience communicating effectively in writing and speaking.
  • Acknowledge personal strengths and growth areas.
  • Articulate and scrutinize personal values and beliefs.
  • Use reflective thinking to expand self-knowledge, growth and maturity.
  • Apply unique elements of Ignatian spirituality to personal life.
  • Use self-knowledge for vocational discernment.
  • Work collaboratively with others.
  • Lead others in commitment and action.

To Apply to the I-Lead program, please fill out the online application.  You will be asked to submit a resume as part of this application. Applications are due by December 31, 2018.
