Trinity Nonprofit Agency: Meta House, Volunteer and In-Kind Gifts Coordinator
I did a year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA working as the Community Relations Coordinator at Habitat for Humanity of Adams and Juneau Counties in Mauston, Wisconsin. It was a small affiliate so I worked hard to build a database of potential community partners that could be used as volunteers, donors, and supporters. I also built out their website and increased their social media presence.
At my placement I worked with outside organizations to increase community support in the form of in-kind donations and volunteer engagement. For example, I worked with restaurants and community groups to increase the number of donations for both our Monday night program, Celebrating Families, and our weekly lunch program for outpatient clients. I also helped coordinate our first and second Young Professional Collaborative – an opportunity for Milwaukee area young professionals to give back to their community while networking with like-minded individuals. From that event, we launched a Young Professionals Advisory Committee which helps coordinate quarterly fundraising and outreach events.
Through my coursework I was able to gain a wider knowledge about what it takes to be a leader in the nonprofit field. Specifically, I learned about financial matters, administrative law, urban planning, and social justice. Combined, these courses give me a solid foundation of knowledge that will allow me to continue my work in the nonprofit field while building upon my capacity as a leader.
