Undergraduate Tutor, Ott Memorial Writing Center

Learning from and with peers

Watching my own video and my VPOD was a great experience for my progress as a tutor. My own video—aside from showing me how weird it is to watch myself tutor—allowed me to see where I can get more of the writer’s perspective before offering feedback. I need to ask more questions surrounding a writer’s intentions, vision, and agenda before I offer input. And watching my group, noticed how actively each of my members listens to their writers. I also noticed their timing in using directive strategies, and then how they knew to be more hands-off when necessary. It was a great experience, and the dialogue that ensued after was a great way for me to improve as a reflective tutor.
