Tutoring Expertise and Passion

My name is Ali L. The pronouns I prefer are she/her/hers. I am studying Forensic Science and Philosophy with a minor in Biology. This is my 3rd year at Marquette. The writers I like are Kate Harding, Judy Melinek M.D., and Simone de Beauvoir. My favorite pieces to write are poetry and position papers. As a tutor I love working on Philosophy papers and research proposals.

I work well with APA and MLA style citations.

Statement of Tutoring Philosophy

I’ve never liked the limitations that words create. Individual words are suffocating. Words demand precision and narrow a scope to the point of feeling separated from thoughts that once felt like they made so much sense. Writing seems overwhelming when it consistently demands great communication and definitions. However, there is another way to think about it. To define is to limit, but to write is to challenge those limitations. Writers reclaim their power over language when they wrangle abstract ideas and compress them into coherently thoughtful explanations. Writing is always personal and never natural. It is a process but one that builds a deeper intimacy with our ideas and what we truly believe. My personal objective as a writing tutor is to help writers create pieces that truthfully and accurately reflect them through arguments, analyses, discussions, and language, because maintaining one’s individuality through writing is a sure sign that the writer didn’t let individual words overpower them.

Goals

  • To prioritize every writer’s individuality and tailor the conference to their needs
  • To help create an organized plan of attack for all writers, especially those coming in stuck or in the brainstorming phase
  • To remind every writer that we would be happy to see them again in the Ott for future appointments
