The writing center is here to help students succeed and become better writers, and in my tutoring I will do my best to put that into process. Meeting with a tutor is not a guarantee of a better grade, but I will try to prioritize each writer’s concerns and help them succeed. The Ott should be a place where all students are welcome, where we can respond to each writer’s individual needs and respect each person’s identity. In my conferences, I try to implement this by being flexible and accommodating writers however I can. Individuality and diversity brings strength to our writing center and to writing in general.I also value the process of writing. Every writer has room to improve, but there are no “bad writers.” It’s okay to struggle with the process of writing—it’s a difficult skill that only gets easier with practice. In my conferences, I hope to help writers value wherever they are at in the writing process like I try to do in my own writing. Every “bad” draft is another step closer to a final product that you are satisfied with. My hope is that every writer who leaves the Ott does so with increased confidence, with concrete ideas of how to revise their writing, and with pride in the work they are doing.
