It’s important to me that I help writers express themselves clearly in their writing and that I take the time to explain to them my suggestions so that they have an understanding of how to improve their writing on their own, after the appointment is over. This is why I make an effort to ask guiding questions and to provide suggestions or examples that I find useful. In order to do this effectively, however, I believe it’s my responsibility to create an environment in which the writer feels comfortable expressing both their concerns and their ideas with me. Having a conversation about the writing can be very eye-opening and can steer the writer towards improvement; in order for this to happen, the writer needs to feel that they can talk to me, which is why I take the time at the beginning and throughout the conference to bond with the writer. If I’ve guided a writer to improvement and provided them with some useful tips, as well as enabled them to openly discuss their thoughts with me throughout the conference, then I believe I’ve done my part.
