the city - sydney, Australia

Located on the southeast coast of Australia, Sydney is the country’s oldest and most important city. It grew from a small colony of 1,000 people in Sydney Cove to the largest city in Australia, with a population close to four million. It has become a vibrant, diverse city of vast economic power that has great skyscrapers, daring restaurants and heavenly beaches. The climate is temperate most of the time, and there are as much as 300 sunny days per year.  The wettest months are March to May, and the hottest months are January and February.

Sydney has an excellent public transport system, with bus, train and ferry services throughout the city. The railway network spreads from Bondi Junction in the east to the Blue Mountains in the west. Residents travel easily from ocean beaches to lush national parks to Australia’s best shopping, restaurant and entertainment venues.

The University - MACquarie University

Macquarie University is a modern, sophisticated institution recognized for its innovative programs, academic achievement and high quality research. It is located in one of the most attractive and affluent areas in Sydney surrounded by quiet residential communities and Australia’s premier technology precinct. The location also offers a good transportation system that makes it easy to get from the University to the city center, either by train or bus.

The university’s student body of 33,000 includes 10,000 international students from 114 countries. Students can take classes in areas of study such as business, politics, international relations, media and communication, education and anthropology just to name few. There is also an internship program open to international students who wish to acquire credits for a non-paid internship in Sydney.

With a comprehensive library, computer labs, a student union and sports association, students are provided all of the necessary resources. An innovative university, Macquarie recognizes that students lead busy lifestyles. By providing online lectures (iLectures), students can listen to recordings of lectures on his/her own time helping students succeed academically.

Macqaurie University Village offers a range of stylish, fully furnished apartments right on Macquarie University’s main campus. The Village was opened in 2000 and caters for a vibrant community of 894 residents. From studying to socializing, it offers everything you need to make the most of your university experience.

Visa & travel

Exchange and study abroad students must enter Australia with a sub-class 575 student visa and not a tourist visa.  Before they can apply for a visa students will need a letter of offer from Macquarie University and a Certificate of Enrollment (CoE).  U.S. citizens can apply for visas online.  The current charge for a student visa is A$550. Student visas automatically grant students permission to do paid work while studying (up to 20 hours per week while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks).

Students participating in this program are expected to make their own flight arrangements.  You must wait until you have been officially accepted by Macquarie before purchasing airline tickets.  Student Universe (www.studentuniverse.com) and STA Travel (www.statravel.com) are two travel agencies that can often help students find flexible, discounted tickets.

Program type

This is a Marquette program, so most financial aid and scholarships apply. To learn more about how the program will affect your specific aid package, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Historic course equivalencies

Please note that the courses listed here have been approved in general for Marquette credit.  However, because each individual academic record is unique, depending on the college, the major and courses taken previously, not every course will qualify to be used toward a Marquette degree.  Therefore, current Marquette students must have prior approval from the their college office, before enrolling in these courses.  Without this prior approval, any course taken at another institution will likely not be accepted toward the Marquette degree.
