Because of limited opportunities for US citizens to travel to Cuba and the country’s historical leadership and political identity, Cuba fascinates and invites exploration. Cuba is the most populous island nation in the Caribbean, with a population of over 11 million people and is the largest in area. Its culture and people originate from diverse sources, including the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, Spanish colonialists, African slaves and the United States influences. Cuba has an incredible 99.8% literacy rate, an infant death rate lower than some developed countries, and an average life expectancy of 77.64. The country is rich in the arts, including music, literature, and theater, as well as in the areas of cuisine and sports.
This three-credit program revolves around the study of Cuban theater. Students will examine Cuba today through the perspective of theater.
