The City - lille, france

The city of Lille dates back to the Middle Ages. Today, the city consists of 220,000 inhabitants; however, Lille is part of an urban community of 87 towns with more than one million inhabitants making it the fourth largest city in France and by far the largest city in northern France. Lille is located only 38 minutes from Brussels, one hour from Paris, two hours from London and three hours from Cologne. Its locality adds to its cultural diversity. This diversity is precisely what helped Lille to be named the 2004 “European Capital of Culture”.

The focal point of Lille is the Grande-Place, also known as place du General-de-Gaulle, which marks the southern boundary of the old quarter, Vieux Lille. The southern part of the city is the central shopping area which extends from Rue de Bethune as far as the adjacent square of place Bethune and place de la Republique. On Saturdays, this area is crowded with shoppers, and outdoor cafes make the streets extremely lively.

The university - universite catholique de lille

The Université Catholique de Lille offers exceptional academic and study abroad experience across its 20 colleges. For French majors and minors, the college of Arts & Sciences offers exceptional French language and culture options. For engineers, HEI Lille has a number of courses taught in English that will allow them to get an international perspective on their discipline. In business, IÉSEG school of business and management is committed to a policy of international development. The university’s summer program is also very strong, and provides students a wonderful chance to develop their French skills in a beautiful setting.

Lille Catholic is one of France's most private and dynamic campuses. It's within easy walking distance from student residences, restaurants and near the culture center of Lille, one of France’s largest student cities and European metropolises. The campus is active with numerous study rooms, cafeterias and five computer labs. Students also take advantage of a fully equipped gym to take up a variety of sports such as soccer, rugby, handball, volleyball, basketball, fitness and many others.

housing

Marquette students live in one of the university residence halls which are managed by the Association d’Entraide Universitaire (AEU). Rooms are furnished and students share kitchens and laundry facilities. Depending on the hall selected the price can range from approximately 274 euros to 455 euros per month. Students are required to pay the entire first month rent upon arrival and then every consecutive month in the first week of each month.

AEU also manages the cafeteria where students can buy discounted meal vouchers. Meals at the cafeteria cost approximately 3 euros and vouchers can be purchased in books of 10. There are also a variety of restaurants and eateries around campus where students can purchase meals. Lille estimates students will spend approximately 300 euros per month on food, depending on how they choose to eat.

academics

Eligibility
Minimum junior standing; 3.0 GPA; five semesters of college level French for courses taught in French

Language
Courses taught in French; some courses taught in English available

Orientation
Students will attend an orientation prior to departure.

Courses offered
Because Marquette students have access to Lille’s many campuses, there are a wide variety of academic options. French majors and minors can take courses all in French that cover almost all of the humanities and social sciences, with a special emphasis on French culture, history and language. Engineering students have access to one of France’s best engineering schools, with courses taught in English. Business students can take courses in English and French from two of Lille’s business schools.

Courses at Lille often meet for fewer hours than MU courses and transfer back most regularly as 2 credits. For that reasons students will take more courses than at Marquette, but are able to combine courses to meet 3 credit course requirements at Marquette. Grades do not transfer to Marquette University for this program. Only credits will transfer provided that a grade of “C” or higher is earned.

visa & travel

A student visa is required for this program. Students must register with CampusFrance and begin the visa process as soon as they are accepted by Lille. OIE can help answer questions about the visa process, but securing the visa is the sole responsibility of the student.

Students participating in this program are expected to make their own flight arrangements. You must wait until you have been officially accepted by the program before purchasing airline tickets. Student Universe (www.studentuniverse.com) and STA Travel (www.statravel.com) are two travel agencies that can often help students find flexible, discounted tickets.

Program type

This is an external approved program, so only federal and state financial aid applies. To learn more about how the program will affect your specific aid package, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.

historic course equivalencies

Please note that the courses listed here have been approved in general for Marquette credit.  However, because each individual academic record is unique, depending on the college, the major and courses taken previously, not every course will qualify to be used toward a Marquette degree.  Therefore, current Marquette students must have prior approval from the their college office, before enrolling in these courses.  Without this prior approval, any course taken at another institution will likely not be accepted toward the Marquette degree.
