GERMANY STUDY
ABROAD PROGRAMS

The city - marburg, germany

Located in the wooded Lahn River valley in the state of Hesse, Marburg is picture-postcard gorgeous. Marburg is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany; its many architectural gems include Germany's oldest Gothic church, the Elisabethkirche. An ambitious project to restore the city's half-timbered housese has added tremendously to Marburg's immense charm. On a hill high above, the city is dominated by the Landgrafenschloss, an imposing 13th-centruy stone castle. Formerly the home of Hesse's rulers, today it's a museum and a student residence. With a population of 80,000, Marburg offers the friendliness and convenience of a small city, but as a university town, Marburg also offers plenty of culture and nightlife.

The University - Philipps UniversitÄt

Philipps-Universität, which is almost 500 years old, is the oldest and most traditional university in the state of Hessen and considers itself to be a classical university offering a full range of courses with a modern approach. Its broad range of arts and humanities, and its experimentally challenging scientific work, constitute an ideal platform for interdisciplinary cooperation. The university relies on innovative teaching methods (with short course durations) and networked research, and offers students from all over the world a broad range of courses.

While students at Marburg experience first rate research and teaching, they also enjoy a peaceful environment. Anonymity and overcrowded lecture halls are uncommon at Philipps-Universität. Lecturers and students cherish Marburg mainly because of its attractive historic town center, its delightful landscape and its wide range of cultural activities. In the city of Marburg, which is located on the banks of the Lahn river and has a population of almost 80,000 inhabitants, practically everything revolves around the university with its almost 18,500 students and 7,500 employees.

Many academic subjects are available at Philipps, with the widest selection among the humanities and social sciences disciplines. Students can take philosophy and theology at Marburg.

Grades do not transfer to Marquette University for this program.  Only credits will transfer provided that a grade of “C” or higher is earned.

Visit the Philipps Universitat course offerings page for more information.

Historic course equivalencies
Please note that the courses listed here have been approved in general for Marquette credit.  However, because each individual academic record is unique, depending on the college, the major and courses taken previously, not every course will qualify to be used toward a Marquette degree.  Therefore, current Marquette students must have prior approvall from the their college office, before enrolling in these courses.  Without this prior approval, any course taken at another institution will likely not be accepted toward the Marquette degree.

Housing

Marquette students generally live in one of the university dormitories. Since Marburg has a historical center with mostly small, traditional houses, there is little space to accommodate the large number of students in the center of town. That is why the dorms are situated outside the city center and can easily be reached by local bus lines or by foot.

In the dorm room there is a laundry washing facility, and there are common bathrooms, showers and kitchens. You will also find laundry rooms in every dormitory building. Bed sheets will be provided, but you will need to bring your own towels with you. You will receive your room assignment on arrival day.

There are several cafeterias in university buildings where students can purchase beverages and snacks. In town there are several snack bars, bakeries and fast food facilities. Also, breakfast is available in the bistro in the nearby university cafeteria (Mensa). Lunch and dinner are served in the Mensa as well, where prices range from approx. EUR 1.50 to 4 for a full meal.
