Spring 2010 Participant
One’s actual position at DFA could vary according to interests: someone who has very basic dance experience could actually teach the children, someone interested in health or nutrition could accompany the teacher(s) to classes to assess/advise the children in their health or eating habits or deal with injuries, someone interested in business or non-profit management could help in the office (administrative duties, as well as board meetings, fundraising and donors), someone interested in advertising could help advertise for DFA as well as solicit companies to advertise in the recital programs, someone interested in event planning could help plan recitals and fundraising events, someone interested in fashion/make-up/theater could help in the wardrobe, etc., etc.
One could also do a little bit of everything or pick a few things that sound interesting. They are especially in need of someone who is interested in social work (or a similar field) who could go out to the townships with a teacher and help advise children and refer them to proper resources. The teachers often end up spending a lot of their class time counseling the children and making phone calls regarding abuse, neglect, etc. DFA is looking to eliminate this issue. The office itself and staff are a lot of fun, it is a very vibrant, friendly, active place to work and I am confident that another SASL student would have just as great of an experience as me. Hours are super flexible and can be adjusted according to schedule.
