Course scheduling is very important for a positive study-abroad experience. You should discuss your plans to study abroad with your academic advisor and/or college liaison as soon as possible and consider its impact on your progress toward graduation.
The majority of Arts and Sciences students who study abroad do so some time during junior year. Communication or Health Sciences students usually find second semester of sophomore year the most convenient time to study abroad. Nursing students usually study abroad spring semester of junior year and attend summer school to make up the theory clinical nursing courses missed during their semester abroad; otherwise, they may study abroad in the summer.
Course Approval Process
After you have decided on a program, you should start the course approval process. Procedures differ from college to college. Please see below for information specific to your college. The general steps you must follow for course approval are:
(1) Locate course titles and descriptions for the courses you would like to take abroad
(2)
Fill out the course approval form
(3)
Have it signed by the appropriate college/department contact(s), and
(4)
Provide a copy to OIE.
Please visit the links below for specific procedures for your college, and download the course approval contacts directory.
* Courses taken as a part of Marquette Sponsored or Faculty Led Programs are all considered Marquette courses. These courses do not require approval and grades will appear on your Marquette transcript and are calculated into your Marquette GPA. If you have questions about how these courese will apply to your degree requirements, please refer to the contacts directory for your college/department above.
Transfer of Credit Process
All students seeking academic credit must have courses pre-approved according to the procedures established by their college. For college specific information, see below.
Transfer credit is guaranteed based on the following:
• The course has been pre-approved;
• Student earns a grade or equivalent grade of “C” or better
• Transcript is sent to Marquette’s Office of the Registrar
Student Responsibilities
When seeking transfer credit for a course, students must submit a course description and the number of contact hours for that course. Students are responsible
for confirming that their program provides grades or an evaluation of their
work, and are solely responsible for making sure the above conditions
are met. Transfer credit cannot be guaranteed if any or all are not
satisfactorily met. Certificates of attendance and/or completion do NOT meet the requirements for transfer of credit.
College of Business Administration Programs
For programs administered by the College of Business Administration,
transcripts will be sent to the International Business Office and
processed automatically (i.e. the students do not need to make
any special arrangments to obtain their transcripts).
Overseas Credit Transfer
Credits from the overseas institution will
transfer, but grades will not. Grades from courses taken abroad will
not be calculated into your Marquette GPA.*
