Programs Types and Academic Environments
As you research your options, keep in mind there are many types of study-abroad programs. Your choice of academic setting will ultimately depend on the extent of immersion you are looking for. Some of the possibilities for semester and year-long study are:
Direct Enrollment - If you are looking
for cultural immersion, this option is for you. You take courses in a foreign
institution alongside other international students and students from the
host country. Classes are usually taught in the language of the host country.
"Island Program" - These study-abroad programs
operate independently of any academic institution in that country. In such
a program, you would take courses alongside other American students. These
classes are usually taught in English.
Combination - Combination programs are a cross between immersion
and island programs, often consisting of classes taught by professors from
the host country specifically for American students. These may or may not
be housed on the campus of the local university. Classes may be in English
or in the language of your host country.
Alternative Learning Opportunities
In additional to these traditional classroom
settings, there are many opportunities abroad which incorporate learning
through fieldwork,
internships and volunteer work. Some of these, but not all, may offer academic
credit. Please see a study-abroad coordinator for more information.
Summer Study Option
Finally, if you wish to study abroad but are following a rigid curriculum
or you do not wish to be away from home for five months, you may choose from
a multitude of summer programs offered
(usually two to 10 weeks in duration).
