About Madrid

Despite its relatively short history in comparison to other European capitals (it has been a major city for fewer than 500 years), Madrid has become a modern, diverse, and important city with more than 5 million inhabitants. Its thriving architectural and artistic sides are evident even to the most casual observer, and opportunities to become lost in the Spanish culture are all around. The city is also known to be nocturnal, with the majority of restaurants, taperias, clubs, and music places open until early morning.

Among the most famous attractions in Madrid is the Museo del Prado, which contains numerous famous paintings from artists like El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya. The collection is so large that only half of the collection is displayed at a time.  Other famous places to visit are Parque del Buen Retiro, the Plaza Mayor, la Puerta del Sol, and the Palacio Real, one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe.

Business and politics are conducted daily on a large scale in Madrid's various modern districts, but the old Madrid has by no means been overrun and its buildings are well-integrated into the city as a whole. Famous landmarks and museums have made the city extremely attractive to tourists, and the financial activity makes Madrid very important to the country’s economy.

Lastly, Madrid also continues the long Spanish tradition of la corrida de toros, and its Plaza de Toros Monumental de Las Ventas is the world’s largest bullfight ringing.  The season begins in February, but the most important event is in May, during the celebration of Fiestas de San Isidro (Madrid’s local saint festival).
