About Lyon

Lyon, the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region, is situated at the crossroads of Northern mapEurope and the Mediterranean.  The location is perfect because Paris, the Alps, and the Mediterranean Sea are each only a few hours away. Other major cities such as Lille, Brussels, Barcelona, Rome and Provence are also accessible through the high-speed train network.

As a city, Lyon is characterized by contrasts in its setting, between its two hills (the Fourvière and Croix-Rousse), and between its two rivers, the Rhône and the Sâone.  Lyon has managed to let each of its districts conserve their own landmarks and particular architecture, allowing the French and Latin heritage to mix with the beauty of its surroundings.

Visitors have a chance to walk through a number of historical eras, from Fourvière Hill and its Roman settlement to the powerful Gallo-Roman period. Old Lyon (Vieux Lyon) contains the largest display of Renaissance architecture in France. Most of the architecture is from the 15th century, when Lyon was a wealthy trade center, famous for its fairs and its silk industry.

Lyon is also known for being a gourmet’s paradise.  The city has a large number of Michelin-starred restaurants and is home to such renowned French chefs as the famed Paul Bocuse, referred to by some as the “Pope” of French cuisine.

Transportation

The city has a modern, clean bus network, an efficient, simple metro system and a new tram network. Although locals may complain about the occasional lateness of buses or the rush-hour crowds on the metro, the quality of public transport in Lyon is comparatively high on a European scale, and its use is generally a stress-free experience.

The most satisfying way to see the city is by foot. The main sights are all accessible by foot, and central Lyon covers a relatively small area – although it does include some rather steep hills.

To travel to another country, the train is usually the most convenient and inexpensive method, and Lyon has 2 major train stations, as well as several minor ones.

Climate

The weather is in general warmer than in Milwaukee. The average temperature for the year is 52°F, with highs around 69°F in July and lows around 37°F in January. While snowfall is rare, rain is a frequent occurrence. An umbrella and a rain jacket are essential items.  For cold weather, however, a regular winter jacket is enough.
