Located in the northeastern corner of the country, Beijing is a world-renowned
historical, cultural and educational city. It has also served as the nation's capital city of the People’s Republic of China for over 3000 years, surviving several dynasties, rulers, and governments. Today it is home to more
than 12 million people of 56 ethnicities who reside in the city’s 6,500 square miles.
Countless palaces,
imperial gardens, altars, temples, tombs and other historic sites, as well as many natural
scenic spots are found throughout Beijing. Perhaps at one of these sites you might spy some of the country’s
unique wildlife specimens; giant pandas, snub-nosed golden monkeys and Yangtze
alligators are residents exclusive to China.
In the past 20 years, Beijing has developed rapidly into a modern metropolis
while maintaining its ancient-city charm. The Chinese tourism industry has also
come a long way in improving its transportation, services, accommodations,
shopping facilities and recreation.
